On a bright Tuesday morning in June, business leaders from across Metro Detroit gathered at our Macro Connect Campus to learn about three worthy non-profits who were pitched by three members of 100 Businesess Who Care.
With nearly 50 people in the room, the energy was high at Hosmer. We spent the first hour networking, meeting other business leaders who care about doing good and making a difference. When Amy Whipple, who leads the group, asked to see the hands of how many new people were in the room, nearly half the hands went up.
At Macro Connect, we network at many local business events. What is different about 100 Businesses Who Care is that each member has a connection to a non-profit they support. That shared passion of giving back makes for richer-than-normal conversations with new people.
Prior to this meeting, members who wanted to pitch for their beloved non-profit submitted their pitches. Amy and her team drew submissions out of a hat. These were the three organizations selected to present:
Federation of Christian Athletes – Scott Goemmel
A fellowship for athletes who get coached and mentored by coaches who can help them combine the athletes’ love of sports and God. Serving both coaches and athletes, providing fellowship to the athletes and mentorship to the coaches, all in service of God.
RCU Digital Click Lab – Kendra Corman
A new digital marketing lab built right into Rochester Christian University. Called “The Click”, students at RCU will learn to operate in a real-world-style agencies serviing clients, including non-profit clients, should they receive this funding.
Kintsugi Village – Josh Britton
A new multi-purpose organization in Detroit’s Corktown that combines early education for 3-5 year-olds on it’s first floor with an artist’s incubator and gallery sapce on it’s second floor, and an immersive culinary school and event space on its third floor. Together, this village supports the community it serves and allows unique interplay between all components to serve one another.
Members hear a 5-minute pitch, then ask questions of the speakers, before voting on their favorite to win the prize of money, somwhere over $30,000 at this date.
While votes were beign counted for the winning organization, the winner of the funds from the last 100 Businsess Who Care event presented a video of how they used these funds. The Director of Development of The Power Company Kids Club in Pontiac shared the impact made by winning this money. They serve underserved kids in Pontiac. This organization is getting vulnerable kids off the streets and giving them community, essentials, faith, and purpose. These dollars went to serve more of their kids.
Today’s winner was RCU’s Digital Click Lab. They will use these funds to bring on their first non-profit clients that will receive digital marketing support for their programming that they couldn’t otherwise afford. Congrats to RCU!
Why do we care at Macro Connect? One of our 5 core values is “Care Deeply”. To that end, we have a program for our staff that allows them to spend up to 60 work hours as paid volunteer hours per year to support causes they care about in our community. We also host four “donated time” events each year, bringing 10 employees to one organization each quarter where we can make a difference.
This coupled with the many private school and non-profit clients that are part of our portfolio inspires us to give to the many worthy organizations we have in Metro Detroit!
