Detroit Achievement Academy is a mission-driven public charter school that we serve right here in our hometown. In 2024, they made history – they became the first school in the country to design a streetwear-inspired school uniform collection. The best part? It was designed in full by the 8th grade graduating class, in collaboration with a team at SANA Detroit.
For students at DAA, this is more than a uniform. As they led every part of the process - sketching designs, choosing fabrics, testing fits, and working side-by-side with the SANA Detroit team – they created a final look that reflects their identity, culture, and creativity.
The benefits of these uniforms don’t stop there. School uniforms can reduce social pressure, improve attendance, and help students focus on school matters – but oftentimes suppress the expression of students. By involving students in the process and ensuring that every voice is heard, the DAA has taken a giant leap to make every student feel proud to belong in their school.
You may be thinking about the cost to these uniforms, a common barrier for many families. And it’s a valid concern – a DAA uniform cost has risen from $5 to around $30 in just a matter of years. However, there are some great reasons for that change: high quality materials, fair pay for employees who make them, and a streetwear-inspired look that students are excited to wear!
Plus, the DAA has pledged a commitment to their community – covering the full cost of uniforms for any family that needs it, making sure no child feels out of place. A $25,000 fundraiser is underway to make this happen – and you can be part of it. When you buy student-designed, DAA x SANA merchandise, every dollar will be placed into the Uniform Subsidy Fund. Or, if you’re all stocked up on awesome streetwear, you can donate directly to the DAA.
DAA students have bright futures ahead. Shane Lee, COO at SANA Detroit says that “Collaborating with the students of DAA has been incredibly inspiring. Their creativity and enthusiasm remind us of the power of self-expression and the importance of supporting the next generation of artists and designers.” As DAA students step into the next school year, and into their future beyond, they will never forget the school that encouraged their self-expression.
We at Macro Connect are grateful to stand behind them every step of the way.
